Influence of Wave–Current Interaction on a Cyclone-Induced Storm-Surge Event in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta: Part 2—Effects on Wave

چکیده

The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta, located in the southern part of Bangladesh, is periodically exposed to severe tropical cyclones. It estimated that two-fifths world’s total impact from tropical-cyclone-induced storm surges occur this region, and these cause fatalities economic losses every year. A barotropic numerical 3D model used investigate wave dynamics during a cyclone-induced storm-surge event. calibrated validated for Cyclone Sidr (2007) applied ten idealized cyclonic scenarios. Numerical experiments with different coupling configurations are performed understand wave–current interactions on significant heights. Results show water level dominant factor height modulation when propagates into shallower regions deeper ocean, whereas current modulates deep ocean height. WCI causes higher heights waters close coast compared ocean. Wave energy dissipation related whitecapping processes plays greater role reducing nearshore than due depth-induced breaking bottom friction GBMD

Food and nutrition security trends and challenges in the Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna (GBM) delta

The population of the Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna (GBM) delta is highly vulnerable to food insecurity and malnutrition due to the specific environmental, climatic and human development factors affecting agricultural production and fisheries. To better understand the impacts of climate and environmental change on food security and nutrition in this delta, this study combines spatially explicit dat...

A CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'

The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In...

Trends and persistence in precipitation in the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna river basins

The Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna (GBM) river basins occupy about 1.75 x 10 km of the Himalayan region. More than half a billion people in Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh are directly or indirectly dependent on the water resources of the GBM rivers. These river basins are characterized by diversified climatic patterns. Analyses of trends and persistence in precipitation over these river ba...
